And Sony's New Sequel Is…SOCOM 4!

by

Ever since GameTrailers TV revealed earlier in the week that a new Sony Sequel would be revealed today, Thursday 4th, an instant outbreak of discussion crossed the web about what this mysterious “Sequel” will be. Everyone had their hopes of a sequel to an old favorite from the PS2 days such as Syphon Filter, Timsplitters etc…  but everyone really expected it to be a “not so surprising” game such as Killzone 3, Motorstorm 3, Resistance 3 or even InFamous 2.

I really cant remember much people mentioning SOCOM 4 to be honest, so it is indeed a surprise. The SOCOM franchise is known for its focus on multiplayer brilliance and not so much on a single player aspect, SOCOM 3 on the PS2 was critical success and hugely popular among gamers. The game is developed by Zipper Interactive and you can see their abundance of multiplayer experience in their recent title MAG, not only did they deliver a very rewarding tactical experience but also being the first game to host 256 players online. But this game does promise an immersing single-player campaign. From the EU PlayStation Blog:

“Your mission is to step into the well-worn boots of the Ops Com, a NATO Operations Commander of an elite, five-man squad. You must venture deep into inhospitable jungles, city streets and crumbling urban ruins to engage an army of rebel fighters and discover their plans.

“Although you’re vastly outnumbered, you’re armed with the latest weaponry and your men are second to none – but do you possess the stealth, speed and tactical thinking to lead them to victory? Time is not on your side: you have just six days to complete your mission. To emerge victorious, you must lead from the front, maintain control of the situation and fight with sheer intensity.”

So thats that mystery solved, in the end it was indeed a pleasant surprise. We can also look forward to the Trailer from GTTV tomorrow morning.

The game is due for a Fall 2010 Release. For a full in-depth preview about the game and what Zipper Interactive have in store, and some more images, head on over to IGN to indulge.
