Android Console OUYA Surpasses $950,000 Kickstarter Pledge Target

Get ready for an Android based home console, folks, as the OUYA Kickstarter project has surpassed its pledge target of $950,000.

The Kickstarter project had a deadline of August 9th, but it seems like you guys loved the idea of a $99 open design home console so much that it only took a few hours for the OUYA team to reach their pledge target.

“Anyone can make a game: every OUYA console is a dev kit. No need to purchase a license or an expensive SDK. It’s built on Android, so developers already know how it works,” states information on the Kickstarter page.

“That doesn’t mean OUYA is an Android port. You can create the next big title in your bedroom – just like the good old days! Who needs pants!?”

It’s a fantastic idea, a home console that anyone with development knowledge can create a game for and then put it up on its marketplace. With well known industry names such as Jenova Chen (Journey), Jordan Mechner (Prince of Persia), Mojang (Minecraft) and Adam Saltsman (Canabalt) supporting OUYA, it could pave the way for some genuinely unique titles.

OUYA will even be hacker friendly, so if you want to root it or create your own peripheral you can do exactly that without the worry of voiding your consoles’ warranty. Information on the Kickstarter page also suggests the company behind OUYA will be happy to share the hardware design. if you’re bold enough to ask them! Crazy, can you imagine Sony, Nintendo or Microsoft doing that?!

The OUYA’s hardware specifications aren’t too bad either. It consists of the following:

  • Tegra3 quad-core processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8GB of internal flash storage
  • HDMI connection to the TV, with support for up to 1080p HD
  • WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
  • Bluetooth LE 4.0
  • USB 2.0 (one)
  • Wireless controller with standard controls (two analog sticks, d-pad, eight action buttons, a system button), a touchpad
  • Android 4.0

It actually sounds to good to be true, but it’s most definitely real! More for information, check out the video below and be sure to let us know what you think via the comments section.
