For those who weren’t willing to pay a subscription for DC Universe Online, Sony Online Entertainment have announced that it will become Free to play in October.
Both the PC and PlayStation 3 versions of the game will be available to download and play for free. Although there were rumours that this was due to falling subscriber numbers, Sony have said this was their intention from the start. Lorin Jameson who is the SOE executive producer had this to say:
“In terms of ‘Is it a result in a drop in subs’ – absolutely not. This is the right business model. If I can be honest, the game ended up costing a lot more than we thought it would, and this was our preferred business model from day one.”
There are three versions of the game which are free, premium and legendary. A breakdown of each version is as follows:
- Free – Players will have access to the DC Universe Online Gameplay and create two characters. You are also able to join a league. You can buy game packs, additional character slots and powers through microtransactions.
- Premium – This version is available to Players who have spent at least $5/£3. This includes former paid subscribers and new players who have purchased in-game items. You will also get more character slots, more inventory slots and higher cash limits.
- Legendary – This offers all the features in the game. It costs about $15/£10 and includes all DLC packs at no cost. It also features over 15 character slots, more than 80 inventory slots and the ability to form leagues.
