If you’re a Destiny fan then you’ve likely seen or at least heard of the mock up Destiny Funko Pop fantasy designs that have been so popular as of late. Well, as a fan of the figures himself, David Rees took it upon himself to create these fantasy designs leaving us all craving them for our collection.
It’s a combination of skill and passion that drove David to create these designs. He is a designer by trade, creating gorgeous pieces of art by both imitation and originality. He has recently created a series of portraits of popular fictional characters based on an original design.
We sat down with David to get his take on Destiny, his work and what he is looking forward to in Destiny 2.
WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO DESTINY TO BEGIN WITH AND WHAT TIME DID YOU START YOUR JOURNEY AS A GUARDIAN?
I played a lot of Borderland on the PC, which was my first real experience of teaming up with others in a small group to complete missions and acquire loot. Saw a bit about Destiny early on which sounded quite similar, so I got quite excited. Missed out of the alpha, but managed to get my hands on the beta, which I ended up milking a little too much.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A DESIGNER?
For around 3 years. I started by setting up a small clothing company whilst studying Product Design at university. Since obtaining my degree, I have continued to produce all sorts of commissioned pieces within design, ranging from tattoo artwork to office apparel/wall art.
WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE FUNKO POP DESTINY FANTASY DESIGNS?
As a collector of Funko Pops, I was talking with another collector about the missed opportunities of other Franchises. Mainly within gaming. Destiny being my own personal one, but so many others that should be available already, with Metal gear solid, The Last of Us and The Witcher (recently been released) just to name a few. With Destiny being one of the only games I have played consistently over the past 3 years, I had to mock up some ideas. The first one I made received a lot of attention from Destiny fans over on Instagram. I then started receiving requests of characters people wanted to see as well as their own personal guardians.
DO YOU HAVE PLANS FOR ANY MORE DESTINY RELATED DESIGNS?
I have a few things lined up just in time for the release of Destiny 2. All of which will be based on my current style of vector work, as well as some geometric pieces.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED FOR ABOUT DESTINY 2?
Pretty much everything! Storyline, Loot, hopefully a significant graphic boost etc. Whatever they have to throw at me, I will happily embrace. I’ve had so much use out of Destiny 1, I just cant wait for fresh start. I have no issues with the vault being lost and everything I have picked up over the 3 years being deleted.
