Destination Destiny: Destiny 2 won't feature Grimoire Cards

by

Destiny had a pretty rough launch back in 2014. One of the initial complaints, one that was never fully remedied, was that the story content was in too short supply and the narrative decidedly thin.

There was, however, Grimoire cards; small chunks of lore and narrative unlocked in game but only accessible from Bungie’s website. This was a sore point for many, who were understandably upset that this story wasn’t implemented into the game itself, especially seeing as much of the Grimoire was actually quite brilliant and revealed a deep and fleshed out narrative the actual game could only dream of.

Now, back in 2017, and Bungie’s world design lead on Destiny 2, Steve Cotton, has said the following to Forbes after they asked if Grimoire will be included in the upcoming sequel.

“The answer to that question is ‘no’ and the reason it’s ‘no’ is because we want to put the lore in game…”

Cotton went on to refer to one of Destiny 2’s new elements named ‘Adventures’; unique side missions that throw up new rewards and gameplay, discovered whilst exploring the four new planets included in game…

“We want people to be able to find the lore. All the story is told through the Adventures, it’s told through the characters in the world, it’s told through the campaign and it’s told through scannables you find throughout the world.”

During Bungie’s Gameplay Reveal last week we did have a glimpse into how the campaign may deal with narrative and how that might be improved. There will be some players that might miss the Grimoire thanks to the depth of insight it provided, so it’s a shame it won’t be run alongside the game. It is good, however, that efforts seemed to have been doubled to try and include narrative in-game.

We’ll find out how well that’s been included on September 8th when the game is released PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. PC release date has yet to be announced. For more about the game and some screenshots read our reveal details.

Began gaming on a hand-me-down Commodore Vic-20 back in the mid 80's and hasn't managed to shake the addiction yet. Genres of choice include anything that contains bullets and/or bouncy balls. Has been known to dabble in Destiny content.
