Kaz Hirai Suggests PS4 Will Be Disc-Based

Digital distribution and cloud gaming might be on the up, but it seems like Sony Computer Entertainment chairman, Kazuo Hirai is still well grounded in reality.

Speaking to Bloomberg at CES, Hirai suggested that the PlayStation 4 will be disc-based, and that relying on the internet to deliver consumers content is not possible.

“It’s very important that we continue to have a dedicated home-based console,” said Hirai. “Relying solely on networks to deliver content is unfortunately just not possible. It’s still very difficult to have consumers download 50 gigabytes of data or more.”

Hirai’s comments sound incredibly similar to those he made in 2010 when speaking to MCV, suggesting that even in ten years time it would naive to assume all content would be downloaded.

“There’s always going to be requirement for a business of our size and scope to have a physical medium. stated Hirai. “To think everything will be downloaded in two years, three years or even ten years from now is taking it a little bit to the extreme.”

This might a little controversial with the rise of  digital distribution and cloud gaming, but we certainly agree with him. What do you guys think? Be sure to let us know via the comments section below.
