Nintendo Direct 11/01/2018

Nintendo has aired a new Direct and announced that Dark Souls is coming to the Switch and I am so excited! Yes, on May 25th From Software’s seminal action RPG will launch for Nintendo’s hybrid machine alongside PS4, XBox One and PC versions as Dark Souls Remastered, a do over of the original game with new assets, improved resolution and frame rate and more. Portable Dark Souls? Prepare to die in bed, on the bus, on the toilet! Okay, that last one sounded a bit gross, but wow! This is huge!

What’s that? They announced more games? You want me to talk about them as well? (If it’s not too much of a bother – Ed) Oh, if I have to…

So, hands up who didn’t buy a Wii U! Okay hands down, everyone and I do mean EVERYONE – we know Ninty’s last console wasn’t a unit shifter. Jolly good job then that they’re bringing two more of it’s top tier titles to the Switch in the form of Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition, the third release of the game if you include the 3DS port, which includes all DLC from the Wii U version, plus some tasty looking Breath of the Wild content, as well as a port of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, a blazingly hard platform game featuring everyone’s favourite ape. To sweeten the deal on the latter, Nintendo are now including Funky Kong as a playable character, because who doesn’t want to take on the role of a 90’s throwback.

Mario’s first enemy was a repeat offender in today’s presentation, in fact, with the announcement that Mario + Rabbid’s: Kingdom Battle, 2017’s surprise Switch hit will be getting Donkey Kong focussed story DLC this spring. Tasty.

On the add on’s front, new content was also announced for Super Mario Odyssey and Pokken Tournament DX. The former is getting a free online mode in the form of Balloon World, a hide and seek game that will get players exploring the expansive areas of Odyssey. That hits next month and also brings new outfits for Mario as well as some new filters for photo mode. Pokken Tournament, meanwhile, is getting a mini season pass which will add two new Pokemon – Aegislash and Blastoise, four new support Pokemon – Mega Rayquaza, Mimikyu, Mew and Celebi, and a host of avatar fashion. The season pass is up for purchase on the eShop now for the princely sum of £13.49 and the content is due to hit over the next few months.

A few more ports are the great looking Switch edition of Payday 2 which will hit with a timed exclusive character, as well as the surprise announcement of Square Enix’s cult DS title The World Ends With You, releasing in a “Final Remix” edition with new content. Joining them is JRPG Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana.

On top of all that we’ve got some great looking new games on the way: Fe, EA’s gorgeous looking 3D exploration platform puzzler will launch on the Switch alongside other machines on February 16th. Kirby: Star Allies, a multiplayer platformer featuring everyone’s favourite pink blob is due on the 16th March. Mario Tennis Ace will be out on Switch this Spring bringing multiplayer ball whacking action, as well as a single player RPG mode. Rounding things off, SNK will be releasing a waifu simulator female only fighting game, SNK Heroines on Switch and PS4 this summer, with a roster of characters drawn from across their extensive catalogue of face biffers.

So, a lovely surprise for a Thursday afternoon and plenty to look forward to in the first half of 2018 on the Switch! Check out the Direct in its entirety below for footage of all these games!
