Sony has today officially announced that the PlayStation Vita will be launching in North America and Europe on February 22nd 2012.
The Wi-Fi model is set to retail at $249/£229.99, whereas the 3G model will be available at $299/£279.99.
That means that the handheld will not only be more expensive than the Nintendo 3DS when it is released, but the PlayStation 3 as well. However, with features such as a 5 inch OLED touch screen, rear touch pad, six-axis motion sensing system and dual analog sticks, the Vita is more than enticing proposition, even at the prices mentioned above.
Features aside though, it’s all about the games, and Sony has stated that more than 80 titles are currently in production for the Vita from first and third part development studios. It is yet to be confirmed if these will be launch titles, but the likes of LittleBigPlanet, Wipeout 2048, Resistance: Burning Skies, Uncharted Golden Abyss, FIFA, Assassin’s Creed and Call of Duty were specifically mentioned.
Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe had this to say regarding the announcement:
“PlayStation Vita is an incredible device that offers the best possible portable gaming experiences. Its revolutionary mix of features combined with social connectivity, delivers a platform for gamers to play games in a whole new way and to connect with their friends and the world around them. We’re very excited to launch a portable gaming device that goes beyond anything available on the market and is positioned to deliver the uncompromised gaming experiences consumers have been asking for.”
