A Perfect Future

Koch Media has announced today that it officially owns the rights to TimeSplitters and Second Sight. Second Sight was overlooked a little when it released some 14 years ago but is, in my opinion, a gem of a game. You played as a chap with 0 memory but +10 psychic abilities and had to uncover his past through a series of puzzles, shooty bits and general action-type gameplay. It’ll be interesting to see more of this franchise and we may not have to wait long!

TimeSplitters, on the other hand, has quite the following and is arguably one of the best local FPS games ever made, second maybe to GoldenEye. The previous games did not take themselves seriously at all and instead offered interesting multiplayer game modes and a genuinely humorous (at the time) story. TimeSplitters was renowned for its breadth of characters including monkeys, gingerbread men and a dinosaur, naturally.

The acquisition of both the TimeSplitters and Second Sight IP will be handled by Deep Silver – Koch Media’s publishing label. The TimeSplitters IP was previously owned by Crytek after they purchased Free Radical following their file for administration. This then passed over to Deep Silver Dambuster following financial difficulties at Crytek. In short, it’s been bandied around a fair bit. Now Koch finally has their hands on the IP they plan to do something with it.

“We are hugely excited to have acquired Timesplitters” commented Klemens Kundratitz, CEO Koch Media GmbH “The original games gave fans a massive content offer and provided a pure and genuinely fun arcade shooter experience. We have many fans of the Timesplitters series among our own staff who are passionate about creating a product that will thrill todays gaming audience.”

The press release, sent out today, states that “full details of future Timesplitters and Second Sight products will be revealed in due course” indicating that something may well be in the works already. Whether this is a remake, remaster or a completely new experience remains to be seen but sign me up for all three!

Web developer by day, game developer by night. Mostly cranky. Mostly.
