After what was a very poor launch lineup for Nintendo’s latest handheld creation, The 3DS, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has stated that the same will not happen with the launch of Nintendo’s next hardware, The Wii U. In a recent shareholder meeting Iwata said that the 3DS has been struggling due to the fact that preparation for the launch of the 3DS was ‘lacking’ and that this hit the handheld in a big way and that more games should of been produced to make the hardware a ‘must have’ from day 1.
Of course, Iwata and the rest at Nintendo do not want this to happen with the launch of the Wii U and he stated that the software is being looked at to see what is suitable and its being looked at very closely (something which by the sounds of it, didn’t happen with the 3DS).
During the shareholders meeting, an investor also mentioned that the 3DS should have value-added features for parents (i.e mobile phone functionality) –
“If we had never considered combining a mobile phone and a handheld device, we would be negligent,” Iwata said, “but on the other hand, mobile phones are subject to monthly fees, and we need to consider how well this would fit with game devices or how we should balance these aspects. Adding to this, mobile phone companies are generally divided by countries, and when running a business on a worldwide basis, we need to consider in what conditions can we partner up with mobile phone companies around the world. Please understand that we are still researching these areas.”
Interesting words from the top dog at Nintendo and at least he admits that they have been wrong in the past and by the sounds of it, it’s looking like this same mistake which occurred with the 3DS’s launch wont happen again when the Wii U hits stores in the near future which can only be a good thing for us gamers. Super Mario on Wii U’s launch day?…..yes please!
